Proprietary Labels - Dumping DYMO
We are a software author that supported DYMO printers. We will not be supporting DYMO in the future unless the proprietary label requirement is dropped. The proprietary label requirement (only 'authentic' DYMO labels can be used) is a DEAL KILLER for our customers, who many times create custom labels for their businesses.
DYMO, please look at these reviews and come up with a change to allow generic labels to be used. Otherwise, people will go elsewhere, as we are forced to do. We've helped sell 1,000s of DYMO printers over the years. Future forecast=0 unless the proprietary label requirement is dropped.

Be fully aware.
So frustrating. 450 turbowriter started failing. Orderd and got this new 550 Turbo Writer. when the labels that came with the unit ran out I grabbed a roll from my stock from the 450. Low and behold they are "not compatible with the 550 unit. So now I have to trash several rolls of labels. I go to my local staples brab a box ot original SYMO labels. It says compatible with all label writers. and back home. Load them and POOF. They wont work either. Now out of labels, out of patience. If they changed something then old stock needs to be brought back and replaced. Not let the customer run around looking for the right labels.

Stick with the 450
As everyone in the review section is aware, this printer is only compatible with authentic Dymo labels. However, Dymo doesn't advertise that they must be NEW authentic Dymo labels--all your old Dymo labels don't work anymore. How is Dymo handling this? Well, they're offering to replace up to THREE rolls as a courtesy. You heard it right--three. If you have more than three rolls that need replacing, tough luck. The 450 was great, and it's a shame Dymo is selling out their own customers in the name of the Automatic Label Recognition "feature" that is a thinly veiled cash grab and everyone knows it. Dymo is shooting themselves straight in the foot here, and customers aren't going to stand for it.

Poor OS
This Labelwriter prints smoothly and efficiently. Labels tear off easily, which is a huge advantage because this printer only takes DYMO labels (haven’t found a workaround to that yet). Unfortunately, the software that supports the product isn’t user-friendly. I can only put one label at a time into a file unless I import from elsewhere. The integral program to make these labels is extremely primitive and does not function well on my computer, which is less than six months old. I was looking forward to using this for family address labels but with software issues and only taking DYMO labels I am seriously reconsidering at this point.

Extremely disappointed
I am extremely disappointed with the label printer 550turbo as I was using the previous version (450) to print customised labels that are stable at -80 degrees. Now, since with this machine only official dymo labels can be used, I cannot use my crio labels any longer and the purchase of 550turbo was completely useless. I regret buying it and I am upset you cannot provide labels that are stable at low temperatures. Instead of being an upgrade, this new product was a complete downgrade.
I wish I could have my money back.
You could have at least allowed to let us use other kinds of labels if you cannot provide the ones we need.
Very frustrating.

Very disappointing. Do not buy
we have used 450 for many years. now we have begun the switch to the 550 as the 450's are no longer available. One slight problem is they do not work with labels not supplied by Dymo. We use several sizes and colors. Dymo has a limited selection o labels, all of which are white. Dumbest thing I ever heard off. I will be switching all models to another manufacturer. solves the problem. Frustrating none of their sales literature highlights this fact. Read reviews on their website. love their canned response.... Don't think they will be around much longer with this business model

Authentic DYMO Labels don't work!
DYMO Labels don't work either!
Researched the 450 turbo series. Sounded great. Bought the 550 turbo because the shop didn't have any 450s. Thought it was just a newer version. Big mistake. Can't use generic labels and just discovered that the printer doesn't recognise the second lot of authentic DYMO labels I purchased. Had to write 250 labels by hand on a rush job on a Sunday. Not impressed. Would be a great product if it wasn't so heavily locked down. Sometimes less is more.

Easy set-up, nice quality
This is a an amazing product that prints nice quality labels. I do several shipping orders each week and this has been quick, easy, and effective. It is also able to print from several different computers on the same network. Love not having to worry about ink or toner, and it keeps up with how many labels you have left. Connecting it to my computer and getting everything set up was simple. It also prints very fast. The only downside to me is that this printer is not compatible with 3rd party labels. It will only work with DYMO brand labels. I guess though without having to buy ink or toner, your using that to buy the more expensive labels.
